We believe that inclusive education is the norm and ensures a high-quality education for every student. By setting rigorous standards and  providing effective instruction, intervention and necessary supports for success, we provide an array of services and resources to students and families. In collaboration with educators and families we foster high expectations and provide services to meet the academic, as well as the social, behavioral, adaptive, and physical needs of the whole child. 

体育投注In accordance with Tennessee State Law and Child Find, our schools strive to provide every student with exactly the kind of learning environment they need. However, our capabilities don’t end with our students. Metro Nashville Public Schools also works with the families of its students. The purpose of Child Find is to identify, locate, and evaluate those who need special education and related services. 

MNPS Partners With Parents

Raising a child that has special needs is a huge undertaking. Whether your child has autism, visual impairment, deafness, developmental delay, intellectual disabilities, physical impairments, emotional disturbance, speech impairment, or a traumatic brain injury, we have a strong team of specialists standing by to help! Our programs are inclusive and take a holistic approach to special needs education.

All children grow and develop at different rates. If you suspect that your child has a disability, you can come to us for guidance. You can schedule a meeting to discuss your child’s needs by calling our office at 615-687-4551 ext 665698. From there, here’s the process:

Our Programs For Students With Disabilities

体育投注Metro Schools is devoted to making sure that every student receives the help that they need. For this reason, each student has an Individual Education Program (IEP) that addresses their needs. A student’s IEP is an instructional tool for all of our team members that interact with them. We ensure that every student has an instructionally appropriate IEP. 

It is essential that we work with our community to ensure we are all advocating for students with disabilities. In order to do that we have developed the Exceptional Education Family Council (EEFAC). EEFAC is a group of parents of children who
体育投注receive special education services in Metro Schools. Any parent of a child who receives these services is eligible to be a member of EEFAC.

EEFAC meets in September, November, January, March and May during the school year. EEFAC offers presentations on a variety of topics of interest to parents.

Transition Services

Metro Nashville Public Schools provides a variety of transition services to students with disabilities. The Community Based Transition Program体育投注 is a vocational training program for Metro Schools students ages 18 to 22.

体育投注There are seven training sites across the county where a certified special education teacher and two job coaches work with students on functional academics and life skills. Our students spend part of their school day at non-paid job training site in locations such as small businesses, hotels and hospitals.

Our program also offers training to businesses and information on hiring our students once they leave the program. Successful transition planning benefits from collaboration among all stakeholders, including the student, family, potential employers, community members, service providers, and the school system.

The recognizes all of the disabilities as outlined by the rules and regulations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act. In addition, Tennessee has identified students who meet the criteria of intellectual giftedness and functional delay as exceptional areas.

Volunteer as an educational Surrogate Parent for a student with Disabilities

Here is one very important way: Metro Schools is in need of volunteers who can represent the educational interests of students with disabilities.

What is a Surrogate Parent?

MNPS Surrogate Parent
  • A surrogate parent is a volunteer who is appointed by a local education agency/school to assist children who do not have parents or family members who can be their advocate. 

  • The surrogate parent has all of the rights, and can make all of the special education or early intervention decisions, that usually are made by the child's parents.

  • Surrogate parents can review educational records; request and consent to evaluations and reevaluations; and challenge the recommendations of the education or early intervention agency by requesting informal and formal dispute resolution procedures. 

  • A surrogate parent does not have any rights and responsibilities for the child outside of the special education process.
