Grab a Book for Read Across America Week, March 2 to 6

Read Across America Week is a national program that highlights the importance of independent and choice reading for all students.
The week also coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2.

体育投注The week is full of celebrations; guest readers, character parades and highlighting a variety of books that allow students to see themselves, learn about others and explore something new.

Metro Nashville Public Schools is asking schools and community members to support Read Across America week in a variety of ways:

  • 体育投注Ask MNPS students what they are reading and what they like about it.

  • Volunteer to read at your neighborhood school (reach out to the school librarian for details).

  • Participate in Drop Everything and Read, also known as DEAR.

  • Share what you are reading on various social media outlets using the hashtag, #MNPSreads.

Dreamers: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers

This year, the theme for Read Across America Week is Dreamers: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.

The theme comes from the book , chosen by Nashville Public Library for Nashville Reads 2020.

Beautifully written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales, the author tells her story of coming to a country where no one spoke her language and where she felt alone and ignored.

Yet, she found her home in a world of books at the public library. All school libraries have at least one copy of Dreamers.

If you would like more information on the  and Nashville Reads, please visit the .

体育投注Our district wants students to be dreamers through reading as well.  Whether the books they choose are mirrors of their own lives, windows to see new experiences or doors to travel to new places, all readers are encouraged to dream through reading.

Drop Everything and Read March 4

On 体育投注Wednesday, March 4 at 9:30 a.m. MNPS librarians request that every MNPS student, teacher, and employee participate in Read Across America as a collective body by engaging in a Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) experience and read for 20 minutes. This special event highlights the importance of daily independent reading.

体育投注Each school may choose how they will implement the collective reading:

  • Schools may choose to engage in a school-wide read of “Dreamers” by Yuyi Morales,

  • A class-by-class read of an equally worthy book that will encourage readers as dreamers.

  • Encourage a student to self-select a personal read and use the time for silent reading.
